Feeding the chicks
Diet is obviously the most essential element to ensure healthy, strong chicks. A variety of good, handrearing formulas are on the market, with a wide range of fat and protein levels to choose from. Do not attempt to make your own formula. Plenty of recipes are out there. Each has its own supporters who claim that their concoction is superior to any manufactured diet. Although some of these may indeed be fine, the truth is that parrot chicks might survive and grow in spite of a marginal diet, although stunting and permanent developmental deficiencies may occur. For example, some evidence indicates that neonatal African Greys fed a substandard diet can grow up to develop behaviors similar to attention deficit disorder (ADD) in human children. If you choose a good commercial formula. You will be feeding your babies a product that has been designed and extensively tested to support optimal growth and development.
